Ian Hamilton

W Ian Hamilton is the Global Head of Human Factors in ERM, based in the UK. Ian is a human factors professional with 33 years’ experience. He began his career in 1984 working in the defence sector in research followed by several years working on military aircraft projects and moving to air traffic management.
In 1990 he started work as a consultant, working in the rail transport and the energy sectors. In 1995 he founded Human Engineering Limited which he helped grow to become the UK’s largest human factors consultancy, employing over 60 people. In that time he specialised in human factors integration into major projects and operational assurance within the safety critical industries. In 2008 Human Engineering became part of the Lloyd’s Register Group, since then his work has been global in support of clients in the maritime, O&G, mining and transportation sectors.
His technical capabilities include a detailed understanding of skilled performance in safety critical tasks. Ian understands the demands of safety management within regulated industries and he has extensive experience with qualitative and quantitative risk assessment and safety assurance regimes in the UK, as well as overseas
